Reading a complete zone
A zone file is a set of records managed as one administrative unit. It has an origin, an apex (the zone’s own name), and an SOA record that includes a serial used to track changes. Names without a final dot are usually relative to the current origin.
Worked example
With origin example.test., the owner www means www.example.test.. A name written as www.example.test. with a final dot is already absolute and is not expanded again. Before publishing a change, check the serial, owner names, record types, and that every target resolves as intended.
Use only names and addresses reserved for documentation, such as training.test. and 192.0.2.10. Write each full record and identify its owner, type, TTL, and data.
