Root servers and root hints

Root hints are a resolver’s starting list of root-server addresses. They are not a list of every domain on the internet. Root servers direct the resolver toward top-level domain (TLD) servers; the TLD then points toward the delegated domain.

Follow the path

For www.example.test., a resolver without a cached answer can ask a root server where .test is handled, then ask the TLD server where example.test is handled, and finally ask that domain’s authority for the requested record. Each referral narrows the search.

The root does not need to know every host record. Its role is to help the resolver find the next part of the hierarchy. Caches often let later queries skip some or all of these steps.
